Guide
How Long Should You Stay on a Sunbed?
The right session time depends on your skin type, the bed itself, and where you are in your tanning routine. Here's a simple guide to help you build a deep, even tan safely — without burning.
First session — keep it short
Whatever your skin type, your first session should always be conservative. Start at 3–6 minutes on a lie-down or 2–4 minutes on a stand-up, then wait 24 hours to see how your skin reacts before increasing.
Session times by skin type
| Skin Type | Lie-Down | Stand-Up |
|---|---|---|
| Type 1 — very fair, always burns | Not recommended | Not recommended |
| Type 2 — fair, burns easily | 3–8 min | 2–5 min |
| Type 3 — light olive, tans gradually | 8–12 min | 5–8 min |
| Type 4 — olive, tans easily | 10–15 min | 7–10 min |
| Type 5/6 — dark, rarely burns | 12–15 min | 8–10 min |
Guide times only. Never exceed the maximum session time stickered on the bed. If your skin reddens, reduce time at the next session.
How often should you tan?
- Building a base: 2–3 sessions per week for 2–3 weeks
- Maintaining: 1–2 sessions per week
- Always leave at least 24 hours between sessions — your skin needs to recover
- Never tan twice in one day
How long until I see a tan?
Most people see a noticeable golden colour after 3–4 sessions, with a deep tan developing over 2–3 weeks. This is why our most popular hire is the 4-week package — it gives you enough time to build, deepen and maintain your tan.
Safe tanning checklist
- Always wear UV-rated goggles — closing your eyes is not enough
- Remove make-up, perfume and deodorant before tanning
- Use a sunbed-specific tan accelerator (never sunscreen)
- Don't tan if you're on medication that increases UV sensitivity — check with your GP
- If in doubt, do less — you can always add a minute next time
