Lie-Down vs Stand-Up Sunbeds: Which Is Better?
Both lie-down and stand-up sunbeds give a deep, even tan — but they suit different people, different spaces and different routines. Here's the honest breakdown so you can pick the right one for your home hire.
The quick answer
Choose a lie-down if you want the most relaxing experience, the longest sessions and the deepest tan. Choose a stand-up if you want shorter sessions, less floor space and a faster all-over result with no pressure points.
| Feature | Lie-Down | Stand-Up |
|---|---|---|
| Typical session | 12–15 min | 6–10 min |
| Tan depth | Deeper, slower build | Faster, very even |
| Floor space | ≈ 7ft × 4ft | ≈ 4ft × 4ft |
| Head height | Standard ceiling | ≈ 6ft 6in clear |
| Comfort | Relaxing — lie back | Standing — quick in/out |
| 4-week hire | £175 | £175 |
Lie-down sunbeds — pros & cons
- Most popular hire — relaxing, salon-style experience
- Longer sessions = deeper, longer-lasting tan
- Lower cost per week
- Needs more floor space — best in a spare room or large landing
Stand-up sunbeds — pros & cons
- Very small footprint — fits where a lie-down won't
- Sessions are quicker — great for busy schedules
- No pressure points (back, bum) — totally even tan
- More hygienic feel — nothing to lie on
- Needs ceiling height — measure first
Which gives a better tan?
Both give a deep, golden tan when used consistently. Lie-downs build a slightly deeper colour because sessions are longer; stand-ups give a more even result because you're not lying on any part of your skin. For most people the difference is small — what matters far more is consistency (2–3 sessions per week) and using the right session time for your skin type.
Our recommendation
If you have a spare room and want the full salon experience at home — go lie-down. If you're tight on space, want quicker sessions or prefer not to lie down — go stand-up. Still not sure? Give us a ring on 07940 988851 and we'll talk you through what fits your room and routine.
